GRUMETI RIVER CAMP |
|
Grumeti River
Camp lies in the path of the migration (occurring around
June/July) and abounds with resident game all year round.
Grumeti River Camp Location
Grumeti River Camp is set in the
western corridor of the magnificent Serengeti National
Park at the edge of a permanent oxbow pan formed by
an overflow of the Grumeti River. Supporting lush riverine
forest, the Grumeti River provides a sharp contrast
to the surrounding plains and hosts some of the Serengeti's
more unusual species, such as the black and white colobus
monkey. Lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater
lake in the world, lies 50 kms to the west and provides
a fascinating outing.
|
 |
|
Grumeti River Camp Attractions
Grumeti River Camp is situated on a by water of the
Grumeti River, known for its huge crocodiles. These
antediluvian reptiles, ancestors of the dinosaurs, lurk
in the river waiting for the great migration, where
thousand upon thousand of wildebeest and zebra, drawn
by ancient behavior patterns and fresh grazing, must
cross in order to make the great trek from the Serengeti
to Kenya's Masai Mara. The camp is built amongst tall
evergreen trees on the water's edge. The water of the
pan is home to families of grunting hippo, which float
amongst the watery carpet of lilies, and the bird life
is varied and prolific. The Western Corridor offers
more than just an annual stop-off point for the migration.
Its colorful topography of hills, rivers and flood plains
provides year-round habitat for many of the Serengeti's
species.
Grumeti River Camp Facilities
The tents are a delight. Huge, monumental beds, of Tanzanian
cypress, envelop the guest in luxury. The large shower
in the private bathroom is open to the sky under its
wrought iron dome offering all the pleasure of showering
in the open air with none of the embarrassment! In the
dining area and the bar local materials have been used
to create a playful and quirky, yet very African style.
Intricate mosaic work decorates low walls and steps,
bright cushions in burnt orange, yellows and greens
upholster the sculptural shapes of the wrought iron
furniture, while twisted tree-trunks support the beamed
makuti roof. At night the lodge buildings and paths
are magically lit by flaming torches and lamps. The
staff will escort you to the boma, an open-air theatre
for food. Here throne-style chairs made from twigs with
cushions of royal purple surround a large and beautifully
decorated table to make an experience dramatic yet entirely
appropriate.
Grumeti River Camp Additional
Information
Game drives are fully interpretative, and explore the
Serengeti savannahs and woodlands, which have the largest
mass of free-ranging animals on earth, including wildebeest,
zebra, gazelle and giraffe as well as some of the highest
densities of cheetah in Africa, large prides of lion
and solitary leopards. At other times you may slip into
the grey-green pool from where you may gaze out over
the river. Here stone, smooth decking and wooden loungers
with beige covers tie this area to the surrounding landscape. |

Kirawira Camp Attractions
Without even leaving camp one can encounter much of
the extraordinary bird life known to the immediate area.
In Kirawira's intimate setting guests have the
opportunity to experience Africa, as did the early
pioneers ... as if they are among the first visitors to
travel these extraordinary lands.

Kirawira Camp Facilities
This luxury-tented camp is a stylish evocation of the
Victorian colonial period. Guests have all the comforts
that colonial travelers would have taken on safari,
supplemented by more modern luxuries. Located on one
of the Kirawira range of hills in the western corridor
of the Serengeti, the camp overlooks, in the near distance,
the famous Grumeti River with its giant crocodiles and,
some distance beyond, Speke's Bay, a part of Lake Victoria.
The camp is all canvas and is almost invisible from
afar. It is designed and sited to harmonize with the
natural surroundings whilst offering the highest standards
of comfort and service. Twenty-five double tents on
platforms have either twin or king-sized beds, mosquito
netted and covered in bright patchwork covers. The en-suite
bathroom contains a generous selection of Floris goodies
including blissful aromatherapy oils, a robe and large,
soft white towels. The wardrobe is leather cornered
and studded just like a colonial traveling trunk. A
dish of delicious treats awaits the weary traveler -
fresh fruit, chocolate, sweetmeats and nuts tempt the
palate. A large tented veranda allows you to gaze at
the lovely views as you sip your drink and think about
the Empire! A covered terrace flanks the main lounge
and frames vistas across the plains to the misty-blue
Bunda Hills rising in the distance. A thoughtfully placed
telescope allows you to pick out minute detail. Here
you may take afternoon tea, served from a silver teapot.
This is also a favorite spot in which to take a sundowner.
Kirawira serves a potent cocktail called the "paralytic
weaver". The second part of the name refers to
the little birds that weave their straw nests in the
trees around the camp, the first part is self-explanatory!
Dinner is served in the dining tent, where white napery,
crystal and porcelain recall colonial dinner parties.
Waiters wearing the khanzu - a long white tunic - will
serve the high quality cuisine in which East African
flavors predominate yet are never overpowering.

Mbalageti Serengeti Attractions
The vast Serengeti is one of the most stunning wildlife
sanctuaries on the planet. The name comes from the Maasai
"siringet" referring to endless plains. This
vast savannah hosts the world’s largest surviving concentration
of plains game. In addition to the short grass plains
there are beautiful rocky out-cropping called kopjes
(pronounced copies) and thousands of acres of bush and
acacia woodland. The Seronera area has permanent water
and therefore is an excellent area to spot the big cats
and elephant in the dry season.
Mbalageti Serengeti Facilities
The Lodge has 12 standard rooms, 24 tented chalets,
and 2 exclusive suites. The standard rooms are basic
but comfortable rooms in a conventional building, each
having ensuite bathrooms, and their own verandah. The
tented chalets are permanent tents (i.e. with wooden
floors and a rock wall). They all have either sunrise
or sunset views, shower and bathtub, and are decorated
in classic safari style. The exclusive suites are luxurious
two bedroom accommodation, great for an indulgent holiday,
or to comfortably accommodate a family of four. Each
has an open-air hot tub, mini bar, wide screen TV, DVD
player and stereo. The restaurant's cuisine is something
special, with themed evenings such as Thai evening and
African night. You can enjoy your meals indoors or around
the swimming pool under the stars.

KUSINI CAMP |
|
The Serengeti is superb cheetah
habitat, boasting the largest population in Africa,
and is one of the few places where it can be considered
a common animal.
Camp
Kusini Location
The camp is located in the Hambi ya Mwaki-Nyeb Kopjes
in the south central Serengeti in the western area near
the border with the Maswa Game Reserve. The camp lies
carefully couched in an outcrop of large boulders (or
Kopjes). The actual site was chosen because of the views,
the unusual location and the all-year proximity of game
which is due to easy access from the camp to several
different types of habitat - short grass plains, rocky
outcroppings and acacia bush / woodland. The camp is
a 15 minute drive from it’s own airstrip.
|
 |
|
Camp Kusini Attractions
By far the most famous and spectacular event is the
annual migration of Wildebeest from the north. With
the Wildebeest come Zebra, Thomson's gazelle and the
full range of predators. This takes place during December
to March. However, the mass movement of the migration
can be influenced by many factors including the unpredictable
seasonal nature of the rainfall. The seasonal changes
influencing the vegetation changes which in turn influences
the movement of animals.
Camp Kusini Facilities
Built in and around a large kopje, the camp offers spectacular
views across Tortillas woodland situated on the edge
of the short grass plains. The camp comprises of 12
double tents scattered around the kopje with the mess
tent and common area as the central feature. Privacy
between tents is guaranteed as they are a substantial
distance from each other and are generally concealed
by a tree or kopje. The tents face in different directions
giving different views from the other tents although
the general direction of the camp is south. Spectacular
sunsets and sunrises can be viewed from the kopje within
the camp. |

MIGRATION CAMP NORTHERN
SERENGETI |
|
The Migration Camp sits on the
banks of the Grumeti River, so you can usually hear
the hippos at night. It is also close to the Lobo area
for great wildlife viewing.
Migration
Camp Location
Migration Camp is located in roughly the center of the
northern Serengeti. Situated on a large ridge above
the Grumeti River, the lodge offers commanding views
of the surrounding landscape. Approximately 25 miles
to the north is Kenya and the Masai Mara National Park.
The border has been closed since 1977 and you are not
allowed to drive into the Masai Mara from the Serengeti.
The Central Serengeti, specifically Seronera, is located
about 30 miles to the south. |

Migration Camp Attractions
Migration Camp is recommended during a portion of the
dry season from early July through mid November when
game viewing is good to excellent in the immediate area.
July (northward migration) and October (southward migration)
are the absolute best times to visit. During these months,
the migration should be in full swing and hundreds of
thousands of wildebeest and zebra should be passing
through the immediate area as they make their way to
or from the Serengeti plains.
Migration Camp Facilities
Accommodations at Migration Camp consist of 20 luxury
suites under canvas on elevated wooden platforms. There
are 12 doubles, 7 twins and 1 honeymoon suite. The doubles
can be converted to triples to accommodate two adults
and one child. Each tent is massive and well appointed
with beautiful hardwood floors and rich furnishings
including a writing desk, leather love seat and power
outlets to charge your camera or camcorder batteries.
There is a small balcony at the back of each tent with
two cozy rocking chairs. Each tent is also equipped
with en suite bathrooms with running water, dual washbasins,
toilet, shower and even a hairdryer. Intimate accommodations,
great food, friendly service, entertaining hippos and
an authentic bush feel combine to form the ideal place
from which to explore the remote and wild Northern Serengeti.
The only downside with Migration Camp is that it is
a long walk from your tent to the dining and reception
area including a steep set of stairs (approx. 45 steps).
But even those steps add to the beauty and appeal of
the Migration Camp, allowing the main lodge, pool, dining
and common area to have spectacular and relaxing views.
